A Daydreamer and a Clown (Aight Den)

by :brownstudy

/

about

A free-floating, nerd-flavored rhyme spree taking full advantage of ADHD, over a knockin' blend of analog bass, punchy drums and handcrafted synth tones.

"Dazzling verbosity pours out of Jason Hogans in his sonically challenging guise as dubtronic jazz-rap stoner-shaman :Brownstudy. Emerging from the Detroit techno scene, Hogans later developed a more homespun mix of DIY beats and stand-up rhymes that jump between acerbic social commentary and surreal wordplay in the space of a wonky groove ... an undeniably serious talent." – Uncut Magazine

lyrics

[Verse 1]
Detroit born. Detroit bred. On some hippie biz. I love my wife and my kids. Small-time hustle, but the craft stays true. Sometimes we drive down to the Toledo Zoo.
I had a nice bike, but some bonehead stole it. They say don't cuff the mic, but that's the way I like to hold it. It's only a slight cuff. The sound still comes through. Have a sense of humor or your life will suck more.
I abhor taking prescriptions to the drugstore, but I love to eat wild plants. Once had a stereo made by Marantz. Total peacenik. I hate conflict.
But sometimes it bees like what it bees like. Fear of the government. Loathing of bankers. Decommission all nuke plants and oil tankers. Perma-everything and evolve toward the principles.

[Verse 2]
Truly a cool guy in real life, but I go there in my art it can get a little intense. It's okay because art is a safe space as far as you know, nothing I say is real.
Celebrity culture's miasmal, but earning a living through your art is the mickeyflippin' best. I was on an upward climb. Took a rest. Almost lost my mind. Life was pure pain and stress.
More than I care to talk about now. Hey, look. A squirrel stocking up for the cold. Get like him. Stack goods to ride out the storms. Stay flexible, aware and able to perform.
Unpredictability is the new norm. Irregularity is the new constant. Expectation is the mother of disappointment. Forage and cultivate. Kill that slick talk and bring it into being.

[Verse 3]
Aboriginal motivation. Studio hermit that collaborates on occasion. Blissfully unaware of the latest sensation. In my own lane? On my own level?
That's what the big homey said. Who am I to argue? Big respect to all vets as I start to enter that phase myself I keep my head level knowing what wealth is. It ain't a bunch of smack like
MTV Cribs. More with less. Alleviate anxiety. First world problems become much worse when the grid goes down. Dealing with the circle of influence. Circle of
concern to big to handle. It's amazing what three big breaths can do. I rep a special crew that grows vegetables and re-skills. Let's hook up for potluck meals.

[Chorus]
Walking with some kind of vision. Invested in the long term. More aware of my shortcomings. Dedicated enough to try.
Won't be the last time l fail. Won't be the last time you're upset. A daydreamer and a clown. I drop jewels and get down.
